Connection: Family Engagement

Category: Memory Care

Author: Emily Koziatek, Memory Care Director

Family involvement in Memory Care is incredibly valuable and, at times, understandably complex. As dementia progresses for a loved one, families often face new emotions, uncertainty, and questions about how to stay connected in meaningful ways. At the same time, Memory Care teams can guide families toward involvement that enhances quality of life for both the resident and the family. As Memory Care Director of The Westbury Senior Living, I have seen how purposeful family involvement can go beyond traditional visits. With support and encouragement, families can remain active participants in their loved one’s journey.

Creating Meaningful Opportunities to Engage

One effective strategy I have used to engage families in meaningful activities is inviting them to help lead special events. One resident’s daughter led a homemade banana ice cream event for Memory Care residents in our community. Experiences like this create joy, encourage connection, and help families feel involved in a natural way.

I support families who want to be involved but may feel unsure, overwhelmed, or hesitant. Families are reassured that they remain an important part of our community. I also encourage them to continue visiting, even if their loved one does not always recognize them. The Westbury Senior Living is a close-knit and supportive environment where families are always welcome. Many families visit their loved ones and then spend extra time socializing with other residents. That helps build a broader sense of connection.

Family involvement can have a profound impact on a resident’s quality of life. I once worked with a resident in the late stages of dementia who often introduced her daughter as her sister. That understandably left the daughter feeling discouraged. I explained that her mother still recognized her as someone deeply important, even if she used the wrong term. This is a common experience in dementia. Over time, the resident began identifying her daughter correctly, which brought the daughter immense joy. I reminded her that her mother knew who she was, but sometimes struggled to find the right words. The moment felt deeply meaningful, and the daughter responded with gratitude and affection.

Getting Involved in the Neighborhood

If a family member is interested in volunteering in our neighborhood, I encourage them to speak with me directly so we can coordinate meaningful opportunities for involvement.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to family engagement in Memory Care. With intention, empathy, and clear guidance, it can become one of the most impactful parts of a resident’s experience. When families feel supported, empowered, and invited into meaningful moments, the result is often deeper connection, improved well-being, and a stronger sense of community for everyone involved. Whether someone is a family member looking to stay involved or a care professional seeking new ideas, I hope these insights inspire thoughtful, compassionate engagement in every Memory Care neighborhood.
