Past hobbies and interests are important to know about someone with dementia. Those interests and hobbies can be modified to reflect their current abilities. An example of this, many of our residents quilted in the past, so we did a cut and paste project making quilt squares with beautifully patterned paper. I love to take familiar tasks and modifying them to our residents’ abilities. This helps to keep them engaged with things of their personal interest and provides the comfort of familiarity.
Engagement is so important in our Memory Care Neighborhood. We love to help residents find a purpose. Our residents may be feeling bored but don’t know how to express that emotion. By engaging them in meaningful and familiar projects, we help them to feel connected to others in the community.
