Fall Prevention Made Simple

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Sihreta Jones, Wellness Director

Preventing falls is an important part of helping older adults maintain their safety, confidence, and independence. While falls can happen for many reasons, simple changes to everyday routines and living spaces can help reduce common risks. Understanding potential hazards, knowing when to ask for assistance, and working together can make a meaningful difference.

At The Westbury Senior Living, I believe fall prevention starts with creating a safer living environment and encouraging residents to develop habits that support their independence. Everyday hazards can sometimes go unnoticed, but recognizing them early can help reduce the risk of falling.

As Wellness Director, I encourage residents, families, and team members to work together to keep apartments safe, communicate concerns, and support healthy daily routines.

Keeping Apartments Safe Through Awareness and Teamwork

Some of the most common fall hazards in residents’ apartments include clutter, loose rugs, electrical cords, poor lighting, and wet floors.

These hazards may seem minor, but they can make moving around an apartment more difficult, particularly for residents who use walkers or canes.

I encourage residents and families to keep walkways clear of unnecessary belongings and remove loose rugs whenever possible.

Electrical cords should also be kept away from frequently used walking paths so residents do not have to step over or around them.

Good lighting is another important consideration. Residents should be able to see their surroundings clearly, especially when getting out of bed or moving through their apartments at night.

Wet floors can also create slipping hazards. Spills should be cleaned promptly, and residents should take extra care in areas such as bathrooms where water may be present.

Keeping apartments organized, dry, and well-lit can make everyday movement safer and more comfortable.

At The Westbury, I believe communication is one of the most important parts of maintaining these safer spaces.

Families and team members should share concerns as soon as they notice something that could affect a resident’s safety.

For example, a family member may recognize that a loved one is having more difficulty walking, while a team member may notice clutter or other hazards during a routine visit.

Sharing these observations gives us an opportunity to address concerns before they contribute to a fall.

Educational events and wellness discussions can also help residents and families learn more about fall prevention.

By understanding common risks and practical ways to reduce them, everyone can play a role in creating a safer environment.

The goal is to help residents maintain a comfortable home while supporting their ability to move independently.

Developing Daily Habits That Support Strength and Balance

Along with maintaining a safer apartment, simple daily habits can help residents reduce their risk of falling.

One important habit is using recommended walkers, canes, or other assistive devices consistently.

These devices provide support during everyday movement and should be used according to recommendations from the care or therapy team.

Proper footwear is equally important.

I encourage residents to wear well-fitting, supportive shoes with slip-resistant soles. Appropriate footwear can help provide traction and reduce the likelihood of slipping.

Staying active is another important part of fall prevention.

Regular movement and exercises appropriate for a resident’s abilities can help maintain strength, flexibility, and balance.

Residents should follow any activity recommendations provided by their healthcare or therapy team.

Hydration also plays a role in overall wellness. I encourage residents to drink fluids regularly while following any individual recommendations or restrictions from their healthcare provider.

However, one of the simplest habits I encourage is taking time when getting out of bed.

Rather than standing immediately, residents should first sit upright on the edge of the bed and pause for a moment.

This gives them an opportunity to recognize whether they feel dizzy, weak, or unsteady before attempting to stand.

Once they feel ready, they should rise slowly, make sure they have their recommended mobility device nearby, and begin walking only when they feel balanced.

If a resident begins feeling dizzy, weak, or unsteady, they should stop moving and sit or lie down safely if possible.

They should request assistance and notify a team member immediately rather than attempting to continue walking.

Our nursing team can evaluate the concern and determine whether additional medical follow-up or therapy support may be appropriate.

Changes in balance or mobility should never be ignored. Communicating these concerns promptly helps us identify possible causes and provide appropriate assistance.

My simplest fall-prevention tip is to pause when sitting up on the edge of the bed and wear properly fitting, supportive shoes.

Taking a moment to feel steady before standing, along with wearing safe footwear, can help residents move more confidently throughout the day.

Fall prevention is about combining safer surroundings with habits that support overall wellness. Clear walkways, good lighting, appropriate mobility devices, and open communication can all make a meaningful difference.
