First impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.
As Plant Operations Director at The Westbury Senior Living, I believe first impressions have a lasting impact on prospective residents, families, and potential team members. As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
When someone visits our community, I want them to see that we put just as much pride into maintaining our building and grounds as we do into caring for the people who live here.

For me, being tour-ready means our community should look and feel welcoming at all times. Everything should be clean, the atmosphere should smell fresh, and furniture and décor should be neatly arranged.
These details help create a comfortable environment for residents while making visitors feel confident about what they see.
Keeping our community looking its best requires consistency and teamwork. At Arrow Senior Living, Touch-Up Tuesday has long been an important part of maintaining our buildings.
Depending on the needs of the community, we complete weekly or biweekly inspections of common areas to identify walls, trim, doors, and other surfaces that need attention.
I also work closely with our Sales Director, who inspects the building each morning. These daily checks help identify appearance concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed.
When an area needs a paint touch-up or another small repair, the Sales Director can quickly bring it to our attention. This allows us to address concerns before they become more noticeable to visitors.
Landscaping is another important part of our First Impressions standards. Healthy plants and well-maintained grounds contribute to a welcoming appearance before someone even enters the building.
We work hand in hand with our landscaping providers to identify plants that are struggling. When a plant cannot be restored to good health, I believe it should be replaced rather than left to detract from the property’s appearance.
Keeping these outdoor areas attractive helps maintain the same standard of care we expect throughout the building.
One of the simplest and most effective First Impressions practices at The Westbury Senior Living is maintaining consistent lighting throughout the community.
I believe Plant Operations Directors should be especially attentive to the lighting in their buildings. It is a detail people may not always notice when everything looks right, but they can certainly notice when something is off.
For example, having a daylight bulb next to a soft white bulb creates an uneven appearance. Even when both lights are working, the difference in color can make an area feel less polished.
That is why I focus on using the same types of bulbs in appropriate areas and replacing burnt-out bulbs promptly.
Consistent lighting helps hallways, common areas, and other shared spaces look clean, comfortable, and well-maintained.
It also supports visibility and contributes to a welcoming environment for residents, families, and visitors.
This is an easy practice for other Plant Operations Directors to duplicate. Start by walking through the community and paying attention to lighting color, brightness, and bulbs that need replacement.
Look at fixtures together rather than individually. A hallway may have all its lights working but still look inconsistent because the bulbs have different color temperatures.
Correcting those differences can make a noticeable improvement without requiring a major renovation or large project.
For me, lighting management is one of the easiest ways to demonstrate how well a community is maintained. When every fixture is working and the lighting looks consistent, it creates a more polished appearance throughout the building.
First impressions are built on details like these. From clean common areas and healthy landscaping to freshly touched-up walls and consistent lighting, everything works together to create a welcoming environment.
By maintaining those standards and working closely with our team, we help ensure The Westbury Senior Living remains a community residents are proud to call home.
