As we age, health becomes a major focus of our daily lives. We begin to think more about eating well, getting enough exercise, and keeping our minds active. But health is more than that – it also includes our relationships with others, specifically intergenerational relationships.
According to an article in Press & News, there are the many benefits of intergenerational relationships between children and older adults.
At The Westbury Senior Living, we promote intergenerational relationships in many ways! My favorite event is working with a preschool to bring residents over to read and do crafts with the students. We also host a monthly Story Corner that invites grandkids, employee’s children, and area youngsters into our community for a story, craft, and snacks. We recently hosted an Easter egg hunt, complete with the Easter Bunny! Other prior events include Halloween trick-or-treating and Christmas caroling within the community to promote relationships.
When observing the interactions between children and older adults, it’s easy to see how much older adults really have to offer to children, and vice versa! They share smiles, memories, information, and more. One of the biggest benefits I’ve noticed for residents is the joy that comes from each of these events. Residents really get to embrace their inner child and enjoy the small joys in life. There is always so much laughter and fun while working and playing at our intergenerational events!
Each of our communities works hard to foster intergenerational relationships and memorable experiences.
