Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Shynese Alexander, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.

Their willingness to reach out matters. By sharing their experiences and inviting others into community life, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at The Westbury, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Learning What Helps Residents Feel at Home

A successful move-in experience begins before move-in day. At The Westbury, that means getting to know each resident through their social profile. Their likes, dislikes, interests, and preferences help guide the welcome.

Those details make the welcome feel more personal. When the Resident Services Director reviews the calendar, they can point out helpful options. These may include groups and events that match the resident’s interests. This helps the resident see opportunities that fit who they are. It can also keep the first days from feeling overwhelming.

Resident Ambassadors also help make those first days easier. They receive a welcome sheet before meeting a new resident. This helps them introduce themselves and begin building a connection. Ambassadors also invite new residents to events. At main events, they wear their badges and proudly share how they support the community.

Sharing Experience Through Simple Connection

Some of the most meaningful welcomes are also the simplest. A meal invitation can make the dining room feel friendlier. A simple conversation can ease nerves and create a first connection.

Ambassadors can also share how they adjusted to community life. That perspective matters. A new resident may feel more comfortable hearing from someone who understands the transition. They know what it feels like to leave a previous home. They also know how it feels to find a new rhythm.

Even small moments can make a meaningful impact. Sitting with someone can help them feel included. Bringing them into conversation can help them feel noticed instead of alone. These gestures create natural opportunities for friendship to grow.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they are experiencing similar life changes. Peer support can feel honest, relatable, and reassuring. Team members provide important guidance. Still, another resident can offer encouragement from lived experience.

Resident Ambassadors shape the culture of The Westbury by showing up and being reliable. Their helpfulness gives new residents another place to turn. Their resourcefulness also helps residents settle in. Through meals, conversations, invitations, and steady support, they create a welcoming community. They help new residents feel included and ready to belong.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
