In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month, bringing the plight of those facing the diagnosis, and the need for a cure, to the forefront. Today, there are more than 6.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s Disease, and while research continues, a cure is yet to be identified. Arrow Senior Living is working to heighten awareness of Alzheimer’s disease during the month of November through discussion and education.
Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive brain disease that affects the memory, behavior, and language parts of the brain. The disease advances in stages. In the middle to late stages a person will likely need a higher level of care to help them function and complete their activities of daily living.
Currently there is no cure for Alzheimer’s Disease; however, there are medications to help slow the progression and treat the symptoms. Also, there are activities that can help slow the progression.
The best practice to engage a person with Alzheimer’s is to venture into their reality. Try to understand what that person is feeling and thinking and you will be better able to relate and interact in a meaningful manner.
A person with a memory care diagnosis benefit from living in a Memory Care Neighborhood because with activities and engagement we are able to challenge their brain. Studies show the more we test the brain the slower the progression of the disease,
