Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Category: Culinary

Author: Jennifer Ray, Culinary Director

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Creating Connection Through Food

As Culinary Director at The Westbury Senior Living, I believe senior living culinary offers the reward of working in a kitchen while serving the same residents each day. That daily connection makes the work feel personal. Culinary team members get to know residents by name, hear their stories, and learn from their experiences.

Those relationships create a different kind of kitchen environment. In a restaurant, guests may only visit once. In senior living, the team has the chance to build trust over time. They can listen to feedback, adjust menus, and make changes that reflect what residents truly want.

Residents also offer perspective beyond the dining room. They teach the value of being present and making each moment count. Their stories are reminders to experience life fully, slow down, and enjoy what is happening right now.

One favorite event was the Westbury Wedding. The culinary team created a beautiful display and added an active sushi station that truly impressed residents. Moments like that show how dining can become part of someone’s favorite memory. They also create opportunities for residents to try something new.

Serving With Heart

Success in senior living culinary takes compassion, understanding, and a willingness to truly listen. Residents may have difficult days. They may not feel well, or they may be in pain. A caring culinary team understands that those moments are not personal.

That kind of patience matters. Sometimes residents simply want to be heard. There may not always be a quick solution, but listening with care can still make a difference. Heart cannot be taught, and the best senior living culinary teams bring that heart to every meal and interaction.

The impact of this work often shows up in simple ways. A smile from a resident can say so much. Hearing someone call a dish “the best brunch ever” is a reminder that the team is doing something right and continuing to elevate the experience.

Small gestures matter, too. When a resident is facing surgery or has a spouse away, checking in can bring comfort. Dropping off cookies can remind them they are not alone. For residents whose families do not live nearby, the culinary team can become part of their extended family.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.

To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.

Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
